Folding Beds were originally called “press beds”.

The press bed folded out of walls, nooks, and alcoves. Sometime even a kitchen pantry contained a press bed where the cook slept. Press beds had been popular in Europe for centuries. American ingenuity and creative spirit gave folding combo furniture beds a new “twist”.
