Early Metal and Brass Beds

Metal beds became popular in the late 19th century. Consumer chose from a vast assortment of designs and painted colors.

Iron bed bottoms from the early 1800s used criss cross webbing of iron strips to form the mattress support platform. Early mattresses were usually stuffed with cotton batting, feathers, or animal hair.  Metal beds were marketed as vermin-proof. It was in this period that the bed sizes standardized.
